Mask Center Opens

The latest center to debut in the art room is the Mask Center.
Paper plates, Papier mache’, plaster and plastic milk carton armatures are standing ready for artist’s to transform them into masks. On display are several different kinds of masks; Disposable protective masks, Feathered Mardi Gras Masks, Carved wooden masks from Ghana, Student made plaster masks and a cut out of the Cat in the Hat from my daughter’s “Dr. Seuss day” in first grade 15 years ago…
Masks are crafted and worn through out the world and throughout human history. Some are functional and protective, others are decorative. Some masks serve in sacred ceremony, some for celebration. Students are asked to consider “why do people wear masks?”
